A small retailer’s experience with the WorldPay Connections referral program
Debra Demine operates MT Videos, an independent video sales and rental shop in Las Cruces, New Mexico. After moving the business from Kansas a little over a year ago, Debra and owner Vesta Hicks became WorldPay customers in March 2013. Shortly thereafter, they joined the WorldPay Connections referral program. When we interviewed her six months later, Debra estimated that they had already accrued enough statement credits to cover an entire year of credit card processing fees. We asked Debra about her experience with the program.
Merchant Advisor: Why did you decide to join the WorldPay Connections Program?
Debra: It was almost by accident. A gentleman from WorldPay walked into our store one day and talked with us about the benefits of using WorldPay for payment processing. We decided it was time for a change and signed up. He became our Account Executive, and while he was setting up our account, he mentioned that we could earn benefits simply by referring other merchants to WorldPay.
So we thought, “Oh, that’s nice,” and we gave him a few referrals within the first couple of weeks, just as a courtesy thank you for setting us up. One of those merchants immediately signed up and began processing with WorldPay. Within a few months, we had a $250 statement credit. And we thought, “Wow, this actually works, we ought to pursue a few more of these!”
Merchant Advisor: How successful have you been with the Connections Program?
Debra: In our first six months, we’ve been paid on four referrals, and our AE is working on several more that we’ve passed on to him. We figure we’ve already received enough statement credits to cover our card payment processing fees for a year – so it feels like we’re using WorldPay for free. Thanks to the referral program, our payment processing expenses are lower and we have the opportunity to reinvest more in our business.
Merchant Advisor: When you have someone in mind who you want to refer, do you generally talk with that person first, or just give their name to your Account Executive and rely on him to follow up?
Debra: I’ve done it both ways. But our most successful referrals are merchants that I contacted first. It‘s helpful when I can tell others how WorldPay has worked for us.
Merchant Advisor: How do you bring up the subject with a fellow merchant? Business people don’t just sit around talking about payment card processing, right?
Debra: Well, I’m pretty extroverted, so it doesn’t really bother me to bring it up. I’ll be speaking with a friend who has a business, and I’ll say something like, “Oh, by the way, what processing company are you using?” and they’ll give a name. And I’ll mention that we’ve switched to WorldPay and we’ve been really happy. Just sort of break the ice and start the conversation.
I know it can be hard for many people, especially at first, to approach someone about a referral. But once you see that first statement credit, you start to think, “Oh, I can really do this.” So I think it’s the first success that makes it easier to try for more.
Merchant Advisor: What tips or advice would you give other merchants about how to succeed with WorldPay Connections?
Debra: Don’t be pushy, but it never hurts to plant the seed. If they’re interested, great, and if not, that’s fine too. But then go back later and germinate that seed – ask how their business is doing.
Payment card processing is something that almost all merchants have in common, so it’s a good ice-breaker – no matter the other person’s type of business. For me, one of the benefits of the Connections Program is that it gives me an excuse to connect with fellow business people, even if I don’t get a referral today. And like most business people, I love to talk about my own business and get the word out, because almost anybody is a potential new customer. So the worst case is, maybe I make a new friend. And the best case is, maybe I make a new friend, introduce them to a great service provider, possibly win a new customer as well, and get a $250 statement credit. In my book, that’s a win-win for everybody.
